In-home alarm vs GPS alarm

If the wearer mainly stays at home, an in-home alarm is often the better choice.

In-home alarms:

  • Work throughout the home and garden
  • Simple and easy to use
  • Longer battery life
  • Typically more cost-effective

GPS alarms:

  • Designed for use outside the home
  • Include location tracking
  • Require more regular charging

Choosing an in home alarm means you’re not paying for features you’re unlikely to use.

Panic alarm base unit

Simple, reliable reassurance at home

In home alarms are designed to be easy to use, even in stressful situations.

With a single press of a button, the wearer is connected to our Emergency Resolution Team, who can assess the situation and arrange help if needed.

Some models also include automatic fall detection for added reassurance.

Wearing your alarm at home

Most people wear their alarm as a pendant around the neck or on the wrist, ensuring it is always within reach.

Because it is worn rather than carried, it stays with the user at all times - even when moving between rooms or going into the garden.

How in-home alarms work around your home and garden

In-home personal alarms use a base unit that connects to our Emergency Resolution Team and communicates wirelessly with the wearable alarm button.

The base unit is typically placed in a central location in the home and has a strong signal range of up to 300 metres (984 feet).

Walls and layout can affect signal range slightly, but most homes and gardens are well within coverage.

This means the alarm will usually work throughout:

  • The home
  • The garden
  • Nearby outdoor areas such as driveways or sheds

As long as the wearer is within range of the base unit, they can press the button to call for help and speak directly to our Emergency Resolution Team through the base unit.

This provides reassurance that help is always within reach, even when moving between rooms or spending time outside in the garden.

Digital switchover: choosing a future-proof alarm

Across the UK, traditional analogue telephone landlines are being phased out as part of the digital switchover.

Some older in-home alarms rely on these landlines to work. As networks are upgraded, these analogue systems may become unreliable or stop working altogether.

All Taking Care alarms are fully digital, meaning they do not rely on a traditional landline. Instead, they use built-in connectivity to ensure a reliable connection to our Emergency Resolution Team.

This means:

  • No need for a telephone landline
  • Reliable connection as networks modernise
  • No disruption as the UK moves to digital services

Choosing a digital in-home alarm helps ensure your system continues to work when you need it most, now and in the future. Learn more about how the Digital Switchover affects analogue personal alarms.

Common questions about in-home alarms

How do in-home alarms for the elderly connect to a response service?

In-home alarms connect to a response service through a base unit installed in the home.

When the alarm button is pressed:

  1. The wearable device sends a signal to the base unit
  2. The base unit connects to a 24-hour Emergency Resolution Team
  3. A trained specialist answers within seconds
  4. They speak to the wearer through the base unit and arrange help if needed

This setup provides a simple and reliable way to access support without needing a mobile phone.

Do in-home alarms for older adults work with a landline or mobile?

Traditionally, in-home alarms used a telephone landline connected to a base unit.

Modern digital alarms use built-in mobile connectivity and do not require a landline. These systems are fully digital, meaning they will continue to work as the UK moves away from analogue landlines as part of the digital switchover.

Choosing a digital alarm helps ensure a more reliable connection now and in the future. All of Taking Care’s in-home alarms are fully digital.

It’s worth being cautious of low-cost analogue alarms that rely on a landline, as they may become unreliable or stop working as networks are upgraded.

What is the range of an in-home personal alarm?

Most in-home personal alarms have a range of up to around 300 metres (984 feet) from the base unit.

This typically covers:

  • The entire home
  • The garden
  • Nearby outdoor areas such as driveways or sheds

As long as the wearer is within range of the base unit, they can press the button and speak to the response team through it. For support away from the home and garden, we recommend an GPS out and about alarm.

Can in-home alarms detect falls automatically?

Yes, some in-home alarms include automatic fall detection, like Taking Care's Digital Fall Alarm.

These devices use sensors to detect a sudden fall and can send an alert without the button being pressed. This is particularly useful if the wearer is unable to move or call for help after a fall.

Fall detection is often recommended for:

  • People with a history of falls
  • Those with reduced mobility or balance issues
  • Anyone living alone who wants extra reassurance

As with all fall detection systems, it is still recommended to press the button where possible to ensure help is requested quickly.
